At the project’s kick-off meeting in the Sicilian capital Palermo, the city’s ombudswoman for child protection, Angela Errore, illustrated just how serious the issue is: 20 years ago, here in the host partner’s own district, one of Italy’s most notorious abuse scandals was discovered. 120 families had sexually abused their children, filmed the abuse and disseminated the videos. The films are still in circulation and the perpetrators are still based in the region. As for the victims, most of them have become perpetrators, too.

Learning platform based on the gamification principle

For the eight participating partners, the launch of their project could hardly be more urgent. Their plan is to develop a learning platform based on the gamification principle, which is above all aimed above all at people who work in a non-professional context with children and youths. The visual elements are an important part of the project, which is entitled “STOPP! Preventing the sexual abuse of children: New methods, content and approaches within a European context”. The learning platform will incorporate artistic high-quality illustrations, some of which will be animated. A selection procedure is under way to find suitable artists.

Preventative work aimed at non-professionals

The initiative for the project comes from Dr. Michael Sommer, who works at the Akademie Klausenhof(link is external) [DE], editor of the adult learning magazine “Erwachsenenbildung”(link is external) [DE]. “Sexual violence can occur anywhere: at a camping site, on a school excursion, in the Church’s preparatory classes for confirmation. We want to help ensure that preventative work reaches not only skilled workers, but also those involved with children on a non-professional basis.”

Alongside the Catholic Akademie Klausenhof, which is coordinating the EU-funded Erasmus+ project, a Catholic umbrella organisation from Romania (Pro Educatione(link is external)) and one from Hungary (KIFE(link is external)) are also participating in the project.

Material for training and conferences

The learning platform focuses on six aspects relating to child abuse. Alongside basic information on sexual violence, these aspects are “Victims”, “Perpetrators”, “Institutions”, “Interventions and acute reactions”, and “Strengthening the position of children”. By means of vivid and practical examples, tasks, statements, videos, background information, etc., the intention is to raise users’ awareness of the topic and help them to behave appropriately in relevant situations. The learning platform is also intended for use in training courses on the topic. The trainers of such courses will receive additional material, such as suitable modules or handouts for workshops. The development process is expected to last around two years, at which point the plan is to hold conferences on the topic of child abuse in a European context in all participating countries.

First Europe-wide project on the topic

The project is the first comprehensive, Europe-wide project of its kind in the field of adult learning. The Polish Empowering Children Foundation(link is external), whose approximately one hundred employees work to prevent sexual violence in Poland, is playing an important role in the project. The Austrian company Die Berater(link is external) is responsible for developing the platform’s programme. Other participants include Magenta from Spain, which focuses on preventing violence against women in that country, the Greek adult learning institution Active Citizens Partnership(link is external), and CESIE(link is external), host of the launch meeting in Palermo – an adult learning and project organisation which has made a name for itself in the areas of unemployment, the prevention of violence, migration and child protection in particular.

The fourth transnational meeting of EXPERTISE has taken place from the 28th to the 31st of October 2018. The town of Póvoa de Varzim has hosted two representatives of each partner country and organisation in order to participate in this Erasmus+ initiative. The main objective of the meeting was to get know better Proandi and its practice to work with young people. In order to continue with the project approach of training youth workers and professionals through the exchange of good practices at transnational level, this activity allowed the Portuguese partner of the project to share its expertise on tools for young people education. According to this, attendees interacted with students of Proandi and together have discussed terms such as what is an emotion, the importance of emotional intelligence in different environments, etc. as base of the good practice shared by the hosting organisation. The main goal of this practice was to apply one tool which could allow the evaluation of emotions and know how to manage them in a work environment. This tool is called Mood Meter and it is used to recognize and understand our emotions and those of others in terms of energy and pleasantness. It can be applied in multiple areas and adapted according to the working target groups. Beside the work on this practice, the partners’ representatives have worked on the administration and bureaucracy issues of the project, as well as on fixing the dates for the two and last meetings of the project.

EXPERTISE, a new European initiative to exchange good practices for employment focused on young people

Organisations from 6 different countries will work together on this transnational project focused on providing interpersonal and intrapersonal skills for the labour market to young people.

From the 13th to the 16th of December of 2017 the first transnational meeting (M1) of EXPERTISE will take place. Two representatives of each partner country and partner organisation will meet in Logroño (Spain) in order to start with the exchange of good practices of this European project.

“EXPERTISE: Exchange of practices to educate, recognise and train inclusive skills for employment” is a 24-month strategic partnership at international level that will be implemented between the 01/09/2017 and the 31/08/2019 thanks to the support of the Key Action 2 of the European Commission and its Erasmus+ programme. Coordinated by the Paula Montal school of Logroño (Spain) in cooperation with ASPECT (Bulgaria), ACP (Greece), VsIEduplius (Lithuania), WSBiNoZ (Poland) and PROANDI (Portugal), this initiative aims to overcome the needs that trainers and educators of young people with fewer opportunities currently face to provide them those interpersonal skills and intrapersonal competences required to guarantee their social inclusion and facilitate their jump from the training and education field to the labour market. Thanks to an interactive work between education bodies, private training entities and non-profit organisations, EXPERTISE will allow to create a cooperation framework to make possible an exchange of good practices at European level related to the training of youth for employability but focused on the self-analysis and active empowerment of its beneficiaries. In order to make this possible, the project will carry out six transnational meetings (one on each partner country) with the objective of allowing their attendees to get to know the training programmes on employability of youth on risk of exclusion of the partner organisations, promote the interaction among their teams towards their professional development and discover their most successful methodologies on the mentioned field that will be replicated and tested afterwards by the staff and beneficiaries of all the project partners on their countries.
